Real Estate Advice Before Real Estate Sales

Before real estate, Heather was an educator. She taught World History and Special Education, and she has never stopped thinking like a teacher. Breaking a difficult subject down until it makes sense, patiently and honestly, is still the heart of how she works with clients.

The 2008 housing crisis helped draw her into real estate. Her early work centered on helping homeowners stay out of foreclosure, and that experience shaped everything that followed. She saw how much is at stake when a property decision goes wrong, and how much a calm, informed guide can change the outcome. It is why she treats advice, not the transaction, as the real job.

In 2023 she founded Landon Key Realty and built it around the values she was raised on: ethics, connection, dedication, and care. The firm is named for her grandfather, Papa Key, whose belief in education and hard work still sets the standard for how the brokerage treats the people it serves. You can read that story on Our Culture.

We are consultants first, not salespeople.

An Experienced Seller’s Agent for Western North Carolina

Most of Heather’s work is on the listing side. She has helped more than 250 buyers and sellers price, prepare, market and negotiate across nearly every property type Western North Carolina offers. Sellers come to her for a realistic number, a clear plan, and straight answers at every step. Buyers are welcome too, and she represents them regularly, but seller representation is where her experience runs deepest.

Foreclosures and Short Sales

Experience with foreclosures and short sales dating back to the start of her career, when this work was most of her day.

“Heather and her team are professional, diligent, and really care about you. Heather was constantly thinking outside the box to sell our home and sold it quickly at a price point we were all happy with. She knows what she’s doing and she doesn’t stop.”

When the Situation Is Complicated, Experience Matters.

Some sales involve more than listing a property. There may be several decision makers, a difficult timeline, an emotional weight to the sale, or a property that simply does not fit the usual mold. Real estate can be an emotional and sometimes litigious business, and Heather puts it plainly: you do not need a real estate agent until you do. This is the work she is most often referred for, and the part of her practice where fifteen years of experience shows most clearly.

Estate Property

Selling a family home after a loss usually means coordinating among family members, an attorney, and sometimes the court, all while the house itself needs attention. Heather manages the process at whatever pace the family needs, keeps everyone informed, and treats the home with respect.

Divorce-Related Sales

When a home must be sold as part of a separation, both parties need the same honest information at the same time. Heather works neutrally, communicates evenly with everyone involved, and keeps the sale moving so it does not add to an already hard season.

Foreclosure and Financial Distress

Heather began her career helping homeowners facing foreclosure, and she still brings that steadiness to clients under financial pressure. Knowing the options, and the order in which to consider them, matters most when time is short.

Unusual Properties and Difficult Negotiations

Some properties are genuinely hard to price: unique builds, mixed acreage, homes with complicated histories. And some negotiations stall no matter how good the property is. Heather is patient and unemotional at the table, and she keeps working the problem until her client can make a clear decision.

“Being from out of town and helping our mom sell, Heather provided many contacts, recommendations, pricing strategy and hung in there until we got it done. I would highly recommend Heather to make selling your home a success.”

Heather is a real estate broker, not an attorney, accountant or financial advisor. Part of giving honest guidance is saying plainly when a situation calls for independent legal, tax or financial advice, and she will tell you when it does.

Local Knowledge Across Asheville and Western North Carolina

Heather works primarily in Asheville and Hendersonville, with clients across the wider mountain region.

A few places she knows especially well:

Asheville

Her home market. Heather helps sellers and buyers across the city, from in-town neighborhoods to the surrounding coves and ridges. Explore Asheville area neighborhoods.

West Asheville

A neighborhood she knows street by street, with its mix of bungalows, older homes and newer infill. See West Asheville listings.

Montford

Historic homes with real character, which often means real pricing questions. Heather enjoys the ones that are hard to put a number on. Read the firm’s Montford neighborhood guide.

Candler

The rural edge west of Asheville, where acreage, outbuildings, wells and septic systems are part of the conversation. A natural fit for her land and rural property experience.

Black Mountain

A small mountain town east of Asheville with a market of its own. Heather knows its rhythms and what draws people to it.

Hendersonville

Her second primary market, from downtown to the surrounding communities. Browse Hendersonville homes for sale.

One piece of advice Heather gives nearly every client: North Carolina real estate operates largely on a buyer beware basis. Sellers can decline to make representations about a property’s condition, which makes inspections, due diligence and asking the right questions essential. Part of her job, on either side of a transaction, is making sure nothing important goes unasked.

No pressure. Always perspective.

How Heather Works With Every Client

What Working With Heather Feels Like

Heather’s job, as she sees it, is to give you an honest picture of your options and what each one likely means. The decision stays yours. Clients choose her because they know she will have the answer, or will do the work to find it, and will point them in the right direction. What she most wants her work to be known for is compassion. Expect clear communication, realistic expectations, and a broker who will say what she actually thinks, including when the answer is not what you hoped to hear.

Responsive and Direct

Questions get answered, calls get returned, and you will not have to decode what she means.

Patient and Educational

A former teacher, she explains the process until it makes sense, at whatever pace you need.

Warm and Conversational

Real estate is personal. Working with her feels like talking with a knowledgeable friend, not sitting through a pitch.

Calm and Reassuring

In negotiation she is patient, unemotional and determined. Deals are won with perspective and persistence, not drama.

“Heather Hines recently represented us for the sale of our property in Weaverville. It had been thirty years since we were involved in a real estate transaction. Needless to say we were total newbies. Heather guided us through the complex process with thorough professionalism. She kept us apprised of every single step, and there were many, of our very complex situation. Her boundless optimism kept us afloat during very trying situations. Her persistence and determination were exceptional. We are grateful to Heather for guiding us through to a successful transaction.”

Is Heather the Right Agent for You?

The best working relationships are a mutual fit. Heather tends to do her best work with people who want a professional opinion, not just a cheerleader. She is likely a good match if:

  • You are preparing to sell a home in Asheville or Western North Carolina.
  • You want professional advice before deciding whether to sell at all.
  • You are handling an estate property.
  • You are navigating a divorce-related real estate decision.
  • Your property is unusual or genuinely difficult to price.
  • You own a luxury, investment or new construction property.
  • You own land or acreage.
  • You value direct guidance and calm problem solving over sales pressure.

And if what you need first is a straight answer about whether selling makes sense right now, she will give you that, even when the answer is not yet.

Heather Outside Real Estate

Friends and family first brought Heather to the North Carolina mountains, and they are still a large part of why she stays. Away from work she is usually fishing, cooking or out on a boat. Ask her where to take visiting family and she will send you to the Biltmore Estate; ask where to eat and she will point you to the Bull and Beggar. She and her husband also share their home with rescued senior animals, and she supports that cause through Rusty’s Legacy and the Asheville Humane Society, alongside her ongoing involvement with the Women’s Council of REALTORS®.

Frequently Asked Questions About Working With Heather

How much does it cost to work with Heather to sell a home?

It is the question Heather hears most often, and she answers it directly. Commission in North Carolina is negotiable and depends on the property and the work involved. Heather discusses fees openly at the first consultation and puts the numbers in writing before you commit to anything. The first conversation costs nothing.

Does Heather primarily represent buyers or sellers?

Primarily sellers. Heather has spent most of her 15 years in real estate on the listing side, and seller representation remains the core of her practice. She also represents buyers regularly across Asheville and Western North Carolina.

Can I talk with Heather before deciding whether to sell?

Yes. Many of Heather's client relationships begin with a conversation about options rather than a listing agreement. She would rather help you think a decision through than push you into one.

Will Heather tell me if selling is not the right decision?

Yes. Heather sees herself as a consultant first, and that means giving her honest read even when it is not what you expected to hear. If waiting, renting or improving the property first serves you better, she will say so.

Does Heather handle complicated home sales?

Yes. Complex transactions are one of her strengths, including estate property, divorce-related sales, foreclosure and financial distress situations, unusual properties, and negotiations with multiple stakeholders. Where a situation calls for independent legal, tax or financial advice, she will tell you.

What areas does Heather serve?

Primarily Asheville and Hendersonville, with clients throughout Western North Carolina. She knows West Asheville, Montford, Candler and Black Mountain especially well.

What types of properties does Heather represent?

Single-family homes, luxury properties, new construction, investment property, land, acreage, farms and rural property, as well as foreclosures and short sales.
